Metro Residents Get Ready For Second Round Of Snow, Ice
Metro Atlanta residents are bracing for what could be a second round of snow and ice.
At around 11 a.m. Monday, business was starting pick up at the Publix in Cheshire Square shopping center.
Josh Greenbaum was there to head off the possible ice storm by picking up groceries early.
“I just bought a few things we were out of, some soda, some creamer and some biscuits,” Greenbaum said.
The Atlanta resident said he and his family were prepared for the snowstorm two weeks ago and aren’t doing anything differently now.
That’s not true for Gwen Walton. After the grocery store, she planned to head to the gas station to fill up her tank.As heard on the radio
“The last time I got stuck in the snow on an empty tank of gas, so I’m making sure I have a full tank of gas and I’m taking work home so maybe I can telework if the weather’s really that bad,” Walton said.
The National Weather Services has issued a winter weather advisory for the area starting Monday night through Tuesday evening and a winter storm watch starting Tuesday evening into Thursday morning. The service warns this storm could produce freezing rain and more ice than the last storm.
In response, Gov. Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 45 counties in the state and advised motorists to stay off the roads overnight. The preemptive move comes after the city and state became a national laughing stock over the handling of a snowstorm that blanketed the region in 2 inches of snow.
Jean Heinsohn is skeptical the state response will be any better this time around.
“I don’t know how much they could have changed in such a short period of time. At least this time it seems there’s more warning,” Heinsohn said. “But I think the people have just learned. They saw what happened last time, and this time they’re not willing to risk the roads.”
If the response is better this time, Heinsohn still doesn’t plan to leave home.
