Less than 24 hours after giving his famous “I’ve been to the mountaintop” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel, in Memphis.
On Thursday, the King Center, the National Park Service and other groups are observing the anniversary with a wreath-laying event in front of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, in downtown Atlanta.
“The wreath will be placed on the exact spot where a wreath was placed the day after Doctor King was assassinated,” says King Center spokesman Steve Klein.
One hour after that ceremony the “50 Days of Nonviolence” campaign will begin. Klein hopes this helps promote Doctor King’s push for peace with the country’s youth.
