Monitor Says Fulton Jail Still Needs Federal Oversight
The Fulton County jail located in west Atlanta continues to be plagued with dangerous conditions and still requires federal oversight, according to the jail monitor’s latest report.
Overcrowding, officer shortages, and faulty cell door locks are among the issues that prompted a 2006 court order.
The monitor says overcrowding is less of an issue, but the jail still needs more officers and the door locks have yet to be replaced.
Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves says his prior goal of being removed from federal oversight by the end of the year is unfeasible, but he says progress is being made.
“I’m not deterred by the jail monitor’s report,” said Eaves. “I feel we’re on course to hopefully at some point in the very near future get from underneath the consent decree from the federal judge.”
Eaves says the county is about to finish its procurement process for replacing the cell door locks. Eaves estimates the new locks will be in place by summer of 2013 at a cost of about $6 million.
