More Passengers Expected to Fly This Summer
After years of cutbacks, bankruptcies, and mergers, there’s further evidence the nation’s airlines are rebounding.
The industry trade group Airlines For America Thursday reported the major carriers saw a resoectable 1st Quarter, with an even stronger summer on the horizon.
A4A expects 209-million US passengers will fly somewhere this summer, making it the best outlook in years, and just 4% below the all-time best record set in 2007.
In a conference call, Airlines for America Chief Economist John Heimlich gave several reasons for the improvements, including “rising household net worth, improved corporate profits, abating energy prices across the economy—not just for airlines—[and] continued affordable airfare.”
A federal study shows airfares declined almost 17% from 2000 to 2012.
In a webcast this week, Delta Air Lines president Ed Bastian said the Atlanta-based carrier’s summer bookings are especially strong, even as oil prices decline. That combination could lead to an even nicer profit.
