Morgan (D-Austell) has been a staunch supporter of charter schools and school choice, drawing criticism from some members of her own party. She defended those positions Tuesday.
“Unapologetically, I am an advocate and a champion for parents across the state,” Morgan said. “And I have worked for the last couple of years, certainly, to ensure that there are options with in the public school system. But my job as superintendent will be not to focus on 10 or 15% of the population; it will be to focus on the 1.6 million students.”
Morgan said she’s running primarily to ensure her six-year-old daughter’s educational future. She said if elected, she’ll address Georgia’s 67% high school graduation rate and will seek to better engage parents. Although she doesn’t have an education background, Morgan said she’s fit for the job.
“This is a policy-making position,” she said. “And so, having the relationships in the legislature to leverage, working with the governor, all of those things I’ve demonstrated over the last eleven years that I’ve been elected. And those are going to be critical things for the next superintendent.”
Morgan is the only Democratic candidate to enter the race so far. Five Republicans have declared their candidacies.
