On City Lights’ series “Speaking of Music,” local musicians share work and stories in their own voices. In today’s segment, we feature multi-genre artist Jasmin Rhia. “I would describe my music as smooth and uplifting,” Rhia said. “Although I like to go between genres, I mostly make hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. I play the violin, rap, produce and DJ.”
Rhia began her musical journey at age 10 when she saw a classmate at school carrying a black case. “I was curious and I asked her if she could open it up. Behold … a violin! It was love at first sight…” That evening Rhia asked her mom if she could start playing. The family was stretched for funds, but Rhia’s grandmother found out about “rent-to-own” violins. Rhia attended her first music class at Morris Brandon Elementary School. This was a life-changing experience for Rhia, allowing for an outlet to express and heal. She’s been on her musical journey ever since.
“I think it’s beautiful when we all as a community just respect the fact that we all have a purpose, and we actually hone the craft that we really feel as though is our calling,” Rhia said.
