100th birthday musical celebration planned for former President Jimmy Carter at The Fox
The Carter Center on Thursday announced a highly-anticipated celebration to commemorate the 100th birthday of Georgia’s sole U.S. president.
The musical event, “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, at Atlanta’s legendary Fox Theatre.
According to a recent press release from the center, the event “will feature world-renowned artists performing live tributes and special guests celebrating President Carter’s legacy of service to humanity.”
Musical performers include Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus.
Former Atlanta Braves player Dale Murphy, actor Sean Penn and Grammy Award-winning rapper Killer Mike are also scheduled to make celebrity guest appearances.
The Carter Center says that the concept for the event stems from the significant role that music has played in the former Georgia governor’s life and career.
“Whether it was on his record player, on the campaign trail, or on the White House lawn, music has been — and continues to be — a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather,” said Jason Carter, President Carter’s grandson and chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees, in the press release. “I can think of no better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than a night of music.”
Delta Air Lines will serve as the presenting sponsor for this event, which will benefit the Center’s international dedication to peace and health work.
“Giving back to the communities where we live, work, and serve has been core to Delta and our culture for nearly 100 years, and we are proud to work with respected partners like The Carter Center to help care for the planet and people within it,” said Tad Hutcheson, managing director of community engagement for the airline.
At age 99, Carter holds the record for the oldest living U.S. president in the nation’s history. The Plains native has been in hospice care since February 2023.
Tickets will be available to the public starting Aug. 5. at $100. Proceeds will all benefit The Carter Center, which was founded by the former president and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in 1982.
