National Catholic Group Rallies for Immigration Overhaul Outside Sen. Chambliss Office
As part of a 15-state tour, a group of Catholic nuns held a rally Wednesday in support of comprehensive immigration reform outside the Marietta office of U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).
With their tour bus acting as a mobile billboard, the nuns, along with about 50 local activists, urged Chambliss to vote for Senate Bill 744, the bipartisan proposal that includes a pathway to citizenship.
The nuns are part of a catholic lobbying group called Network. Their executive director, Sister Simone Campbell, said a state-by-state approach to immigration won’t cut it. She noted Georgia’s recent passage of HB 87, one of the strictest immigration laws in the country.
“We were up in North Carolina and they were rejoicing that you all passed that restrictive bill because they had a lot of new people move up there and help their agriculture community so we’ve got to fix it as a nation, that’s what we’ve got to do,” said Campbell.
No one from Chambliss’s office addressed the crowd.
In terms of an immigration overhaul, Chambliss and Georgia’s other Republican Senator, Johnny Isakson, have so far remained noncommittal, but they appear open to the idea of a comprehensive bill including a pathway to citizenship, as long as it’s coupled with funds to improve border security. Georgia’s Republican House members haven’t appeared as open.
The Senate begins debate on the bill Monday.
