New driver’s license documents requirements
In compliance with the federal id act, starting Tuesday, Georgia residents will need to show more proof of who they are in order to get a drivers’ license. Susan Mittleman has more.
Anyone needing to renew, re-instate or obtain a new driver’s license or identification card now has to present three forms of ID to the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
You’ll need a birth certificate or valid passport; at least one document to prove your social security number; and at least two documents proving your residential address. Spokesperson Susan Sport says you’ll only have to do this once.
“It’s a one-time task, so once you come in to renew and bring your documents then you can renew on line next time.”
The changes reflect the 9/11 commission’s recommendations for all states to add additional layers of security to drivers’ licenses. If, for whatever reason, you show up without the proper documents, Sport says there is a grace period.
“No one will get turned away or lose driving privileges. They’ll be issued a 120 -day temporary, whether it’s a license or ID card, say they don’t have their birth certificate, or need to obtain one, then we’ll give them that information where they can do that.”
Sport advises people to visit the Department of Driver Services’ website for a full list of accepted documents.
