You may know of Aaron P. Dworkin as founder of the Sphinx Organization, a leading social justice organization transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Dworkin is a poet, activist, musician, arts educator and MacArthur fellow.

He has a new recording — “The Poetjournalist” — an album of spoken word poetry with a stirring introduction: “I am the emotion of every story missed. I am the words the newsprint failed to list.”

The poems written and recited by Mr. Dworkin explore the complexity of American life, addressing themes of art, identity, history and the power of women, to name a few. The album is available now on Azica Records.

In this interview, the poet-journalist joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk more about his new collection of recorded work.

“The arts can be a vital tool for prevention and for the mutual sense of understanding and tolerance of our differences,” he said.
