Newnan-Coweta Chamber Assists With Certified Nursing Assistant Exams

West Georgia Technical College

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce recently picked up the costs of 21 certified nursing assistant exams to help address the growing need for medical professionals. Certified nursing assistants work under the supervision of a nurse and provide direct assistance to patients.

The Newnan- Coweta Chamber of Commerce paid for each of the $107 exams with a grant it received from the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education. Chamber President and CEO Candice Boothby says the chamber made the decision to assist West Georgia Technical College students with the exams because of the growing healthcare industry in Coweta County.

“For many, the barrier of the cost of the exam might slow down their process, so we wanted to remove that barrier the best we could to position them to get the certification, fill the jobs that are available and also to take the next step on their journey in the medical industry.”

One of those looking to hire more certified nursing assistants in the county is Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The Newnan medical facility opened last year and is already planning to expand. Gloria Barnes is the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services. In addition to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a new rehabilitation hospital is being built in the county.

“As we are looking at providing services to over 1,000 plus new patients next year, we have to have those certified nurse assistants to be the first face to take care of their patients immediate needs right then and be an extension of the nurse.”

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce believes that will contribute to the growing need for certified nursing assistants. In the future, the Chamber hopes to pay for more certified nursing exams with the help of companies and individuals.
