Next Steps in King Memorabilia Case
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, daughter made a very public protest Thursday against her brothers’ plan to sell the late civil rights leader’s Nobel Peace Prize medal and personal Bible. It appears the next steps in the siblings’ battle will happen in court.Broadcast Version
Bernice King’s attorney, Eric Barnum, says his client has until March 5 to answer the complaint filed against her. What happens next is up to a Fulton Superior Court judge.
At any point in the process, a judge could order the siblings into mediation, says Barnum. “I’m confident that, if there was a way to resolve this issue in a way that both sides could feel as though, you know, the result was just and fair under the circumstances, I think that she would be willing to consider that.”
The Estate of Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., filed the lawsuit against Bernice King, but the estate has only three board members: Bernice and her two brothers, Dexter King and Martin Luther King, III.
Neither the brothers nor their representatives have offered comment on Bernice King’s plea not to sell the items. The lawsuit seeks to compel Bernice King to relinquish the items to the estate.
