Nine Georgia Schools Named National Schools of Excellence
The U.S. Department of Education Tuesday announced the 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. The award honors schools for high student achievement and for narrowing the achievement gap. Nine Georgia schools made the list, including four in metro Atlanta.
One of those schools is the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics. Principal Jennifer Hernandez says the process was rigorous.
“They looked at test score data over the last three years in both English/Language Arts and math to qualify us in the area of exemplary high performance,” Hernandez says. “There are two schools in the state of Georgia that are able to be nominated for that recognition.”
Hernandez says it took the staff three months to complete the required essay questions.
The other Atlanta-area National Blue Ribbon schools are Tritt and Fair Oaks elementary schools in Cobb County and Mountain Park Elementary in Fulton County.
The winners will be recognized at an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November.
