The interview aired on "All Things Considered."

On Nov. 3, Atlanta Police Officer Richard Halford was flying an APD helicopter in search of a missing 9-year-old. Officer Shawn Smiley sat next to him, assisting. For reasons not yet known, that helicopter struck power lines and crashed on a northwest Atlanta street, killing both.

The NTSB continues its investigation.

Two years ago, Detective Erin Nolan was flying a mission for the New York Police Department  in advance of the President’s arrival.  She heard a loud bang, lost power, and safely maneuvered the chopper into a nearby waterway.

That helicopter was nearly new, unlike the 45-year-old chopper that crashed here in Atlanta.

WABE’s Jim Burress spoke with Nolan by phone, and began their conversation by asking how much age plays into the safety of a helicopter.
