Oakland Cemetery in the Battle of Atlanta

National Archives

You may know that a number of monuments at Atlanta’s Historic Oakland Cemetery honor the Civil War dead.  But you may not know the central role the Cemetery played during the five years of that conflict.

This proved especially true during the Battle of Atlanta itself, which took place just a couple of miles away.

This Sunday marks 147 years since the historic battle. We took a tour of Oakland with Ren and Helen Davis, authors of the new book, Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery: An Illustrated History and Guide. The Davises take us back to July, 1864 at Oakland—a dangerous time when the Union Army occupied the city, and battle raged not far away.
