A group calling itself “Morehouse Alumni,” has launched an online petition asking the Board of Trustees to oust the school’s president. The document says Morehouse is in “great turmoil,” and blames President John Wilson Jr.’s administration for alienating alumni, a drop in enrollment and poor fundraising efforts.
Cathy Tyler, executive director of strategic communications at Morehouse, says Wilson has tried to address some of those issues since becoming president of the historically black college in 2013.
“I know the college is going in the right direction,” she says. “When Dr. Wilson arrived, there were some problems, like all HBCUs, and that’s a fundraising problem. That is starting to pick up. No school can live on tuition alone. So, we are starting to reach out more, so we are reaching out more, looking for more donors.”
Tyler says Wilson has also made efforts to increase communication with alumni and students. She says he’s focused on expanding the school’s social media presence, and has increased publication of Morehouse’s alumni magazine.
“Dr. Wilson has meetings with alums; he has meetings at his home with students,” Tyler says. “So, there’s a lot of communicating going on.”
