Atlanta holds a special place in the heart of award-winning photographer Paula Gately Tillman. Currently, a Baltimore resident, Tillman spent years documenting Atlanta’s and New York’s underground art scenes.

Her most recent book, Fringe, is a gorgeous black-and-white darkroom photography collection that gives a rare glimpse into New York and Atlanta’s pivotal fashion, drag and music scenes from 1984 to 1997.

The collection includes intimate portraits of cultural icons like RuPaul and Manic Panic from when they were still in the very early years of their careers. In this interview, “City Lights” senior producer Kim Drobes talks with photographer Paula Gately Tillman about her phenomenal work.
