Mary Norwood supporters gathered at 103 West in Buckhead Tuesday night for the candidate’s election night watch party.

While the wait for complete results extended into Wednesday morning, Norwood and her supporters filed out of the party soon after 11 p.m. The council member’s spot in the final two was a pretty safe bet early on.

Norwood found herself in the same position in 2009, facing a runoff to become Atlanta’s next mayor, but before leaving Tuesday night she said she was confident this time would be different.

“I know our ground game. I know we have thousands of yard signs. I know we have support in every corner of the city. I think that is a great position of strength going into a runoff,” she said.

Norwood will meet Keisha Lance Bottoms in a Dec. 5 runoff to replace Mayor Kasim Reed.

Reed will leave his successor with a thicket of challenges facing Georgia’s capital city. Among them are traffic-clogged highways showing no sign of easing and a lack of affordable housing in a city where rents and home prices have soared. The new mayor also inherits Atlanta’s aggressive effort to lure Amazon’s coveted second headquarters, with a decision expected next year.
