Closer Look: APS Superintendent Talks Restructuring Alternative Crim High School; Journalism In the New Media Landscape

March 1, 2019

Friday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:

  • 0:00: Rose Scott gives a news brief on that Georgia Republican Sen. Marty Harbin has filed a so-called “religious liberty” bill. According to Harbin, House Bill 221 is legislation that would meet the Supreme Court’s 1997 requirement and that means if a state wants to protect the first amendment right of religious freedom from government incursion, it must pass this federal legislation at the state level. Critics of religious liberty bill often cite it allows for discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
  • 3:40: The Atlanta Public School system recently announced plans to consolidate some of its non-traditional school programs. That could mean the closure of Alonzo A. Crim Open Campus High School, which was named after Atlanta’s first African American Superintendent Dr. Alonzo Crim. APS Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen joins us in studio to tell us more about the district’s plan.
  • 30:05: We get a sneak preview of the Closer Look’s team recent visit to Atlantic Fine Woods — an urban sawmill in Decatur. We’ll hear more of our conversation from the brother and sister duo behind the business, Joe and Laura Sissoko, next month when we continue our Open for Business series.
  • 37:13: It’s been a tough year for journalism so far. More than 2,200 people employed in media have lost their jobs at national publications such as Vice, Buzzfeed and at local outlets as well. What’s the driving force behind these layoffs? And how are local markets, like Atlanta, being impacted? We’ll ask a media expert, Dr. Nsenga Burton, Co-Director of Film and Media Management Concentration at Emory College.
