Closer Look: Conversations About Press Freedom And Democracy With Award-Winning Journalist Scott Pelley, Georgia Humanities Council

July 4, 2019

Today on Closer Look with Rose Scott, July 4th edition:

As the nation celebrates its Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, we will revisit conversations about press freedom, democracy and the role of today’s news outlets.

  • For over four decades, award-winning journalist Scott Pelley, 60 Minutes correspondent and former CBS Evening News anchor, has been covering stories of national and global importance. He reflects on his career in the new memoir, “Truth Worth Telling: A Reporter’s Search for Meaning in the Stories of Our Times.” Today, we revisit a conversation Pelley had with Rose Scott reflecting on his career, the important role of journalists today and the responsibilities of media consumers.
  • In an era where many get their information from social media and nontraditional news outlets, the truth can sometimes be hard to discern. That’s why the Georgia Humanities and the Atlanta Press Club have partnered to create a media literacy guide, “How Journalists and the Public Shape Our Democracy: From Social Media and ‘Fake News’ to Reporting Just the Facts.” Today, we revisit a conversation with Kelly Caudle, vice president of strategy and programs at the Georgia Humanities Council, discussing the guide and her organization’s goal to create a more informed public. You can learn more about the guide here.
