Closer Look: Pushing for Pedestrian Safety in Midtown; The Impact of HBCUs on America’s Workforce

• 0:00: Rose gives a news brief about how Governor Nathan Deal held a press conference this morning to announce the expansion of international shipping company Hapag-Lloyd in Gwinnett County. The expansion is said to include a $5.5 million investment in the company’s Quality Service Center in Peachtree Corners, and is anticipated to create 363 new jobs.
• 5:11: Last week, we visited three Grady High School students, Bria Brown, Jack Kast, and Nora Lawler, who have been pushing City Council to prioritize improvements to the intersection and crosswalk on 10^th Street and Monroe Drive. They’re motivated by the death of former Grady High School freshman, Alexia Hyneman, who was struck by a car and killed while riding near the intersection in 2016. Now, we hear from a local Midtown resident Ivan Schustak, who was hit by a car at the intersection of Monroe Drive and Yorkshire Road earlier this year.
• 22:39: We continue our conversation about pedestrian safety in Midtown with Councilmember Jennifer Ide. She joins us in studio to discuss possible improvements that can be made, what role City Council needs to play, as well as the city’s new transportation plan as a whole.
• 39:48: “Investing in America’s Workforce: Improving Outcomes for Workers and Employers,” is a new book, led by the Federal Reserve, that takes an in-depth look into effective workforce development initiatives. And one factor that was found to strengthen the new workforce? Historically black colleges and universities. We speak with Todd Greene, one of the contributors to the book and executive director of the Atlanta University Center Consortium Inc.
