Police Investigating Alleged Sexual Assault at North Atlanta High School
The Atlanta Police Department is investigating a sexual assault at an area high school.
It was reported to school officials by the alleged victim.
The alleged incident reportedly took place on May 8th at North Atlanta High School.
According to APS, the next day, the victim told educators.
In a letter to parents, Principal Dr. Gene Taylor says the school immediately reported the allegation to law enforcement officials and informed the student’s parents.
APS spokesperson Steve Alford says a full investigation is underway.
“It’s being investigated by the Atlanta Police Department and we won’t have any other confirmations or communications to parents until we have something from the Atlanta Police Department.”
WABE's Rose Scott and Denis O'Hayer discuss questions surrounding the APS response to this incident.
Several APS sources tell WABE that the victim may be a special needs student. However, Alford would not confirm any other information about the alleged incident.
“I can’t speak to that. It would be inappropriate for me to talk about a child’s designation. What we should focus on is that if there was a report made at the school, if there was a sexual assault, we need to make sure that we allow the Atlanta Police Department to do their investigation and support our students and make sure they’re safe in our schools.”
Alford did say all North Atlanta High School parents were sent emails about the investigation and that an official letter would be mailed.
But questions still remain as to when Superintendent Erroll Davis was notified and why North Atlanta officials waited so long to notify parents.
