Poll: Obama Even with GOP Candidates in Georgia
President Barack Obama is in town for three major fundraising events, the largest of which is taking place at Tyler Perry Studios in south Atlanta.
While the President has considerable support in the metro area, the rest of the state is a much different story.
While no Democratic presidential candidate has won Georgia since 1992, the Obama campaign has said they can be competitive here.
A recent statewide poll seems to support that claim. A poll for the progressive group Better Georgia shows that a November matchup between Obama and the top three prospective Republican candidates is a toss-up
Both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are polling at 46 percent versus Obama’s 45 percent. Rick Santorum fairs slightly worse, losing to the President, 47-44.
No matter who turns out to be the Republican candidate, President Obama will have his work cut out for him.
In 2008, Republican candidate John McCain defeated Obama, 52-47, despite spending little time or money in the state.
And over the last four years, the State Capitol has only grown more solidly red. Republicans are nearing two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate.
