Among the Atlanta Symphony’s stellar musicians is Christina Smith, the ASO’s Principal Flutist since 1991. In addition to her role as Principal, Smith has performed numerous solos with the orchestra in a wide-ranging repertoire. She will be the soloist in the upcoming concerts on November 14-16th and joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk about the music she’ll play in the solo spotlight.

Included in Smith’s solo repertoire for the show will be composer C.P.E (Carl Philipp Emanuel) Bach, who, according to Smith, “developed his reputation as a harpsichordist first and foremost and worked in the court of Frederick the Great.”

Not to be confused with his illustrious father, Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp developed a deep suite of flute compositions, particularly because his benefactor, Frederick The Great, also played the instrument. Smith will be playing modernized renditions of the younger Bach’s flute pieces.

Smith will be playing under Music Director Natalie Stutzman, who will conduct the works of Bruckner and C.P.E. Bach for the Nov. 14-16 shows.

More information about the shows can be found at the ASO’s website here.
