Program aims to feed hundreds of hungry children this summer

A new program aims to feed hundreds of needy children this summer. The statewide effort is being led by an Atlanta faith-based organization called Action Ministries and partners like Gas South.

According to Feeding America, 24 percent of children in DeKalb County and 26 percent in Fulton County have limited access to food. During the school year, large numbers of those children are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program. But Action Ministries president John Moeller says during the summer many are in need of food. He says that’s why his organization is starting the Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program.

“To know that there are literally 100,000 meals that will be prepared this summer and delivered, I know those children will sleep better at night, their parents will feel better and they will go back to school ready to learn.”

Volunteers with the program will deliver meals five days a week to hundreds of children in Tucker, College Park, East Point, and along Atlanta’s Boulevard corridor. Moeller says the door-to-door delivery is what sets the program apart.

“There are some fixed site programs where children will be able to access to meals, but unfortunately there’s too many children that live too far from these fixed sites or their parents don’t have access to transportation, and so the importance of delivering these door-to-door is more important than ever.”

And Moeller says to make the program a success it needs involvement from more volunteers, businesses and organizations throughout the metro area. Click here to find out more about the program.
