Fulton County currently has eight new libraries in the planning stages or already under construction.

District Three Commissioner Liz Hausmann says that means some libraries will need to close or cut back on hours, and staff will have to be consolidated.

“The reality is that we knew this day was coming, and we haven’t planned for it,” Hausmann told WABE. “We’ve known that a lot of our debt obligations were going to come this year. We didn’t plan for that. We have spent every penny that we could possibly spend without thinking of the future over the last decade.”

Hausmann says the construction was already funded but not operating expenses. She says she doesn’t think the full $7 million will get cut but that everything is on the table right now.

Commissioners plan a budget work session this week.
