On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Music,” local musicians share their work and stories in their own voices. In today’s segment, we feature the Atlanta band Pylon Reenactment Society.

“We originated as a one-off tribute band to Pylon that became a real band,” says guitar player Jason Neesmith, explaining how they ended up with such an unusual band name. Pylon’s legendary singer, Vanessa Briscoe Hay, reprises her role as a singer for the Pylon Reenactment Society, bringing the spirit of Pylon to a reinvented version of the classic new wave band.

PRS plays many of Pylon’s hits, but also records their own original compositions. The band is an assemblage of “punk, funk, and inspiration from avant-garde sources,” explained Neesmith about their sound, all “assembled in a way that makes it danceable.”

The band has been together since 2014, and that long history makes playing together an absolute joy, says drummer Gregory Sanders.
