This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the city’s ensemble of extraordinary classical instrumentalists ages 13-18.

You may be surprised to know that the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra itself was once a youth ensemble, evolving later into the internationally acclaimed orchestra we know today.

Young musicians who perform with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra gain access to rare mentorship opportunities with master musicians, and several alumni went on to perform and hold leadership roles in the ASO.

To reflect on the last 50 years of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes sat down with former ASYO music director and distinguished cellist Jere Flint, as well as ASO cellist and former ASYO member Ray Kim.
