Regional Conference For Hispanic Journalists Focuses On Ethics

The Atlanta chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists will hold a regional conference this Saturday.

One of the highlights includes objective reporting when covering controversial issues that impact the Latino community.

The two topics that have dominated the news during this presidential election year are the country’s immigration policies and the bi-partisan legislation known as the Dream Act.

Nick Valencia says while challenging, it is important Latino journalists remain objective.

“In my time running a Spanish desk and dealing a lot with the Spanish-language affiliates, I found that a lot of these stories that have come out end up being advocacy journalism and we want to stay away from that.”

Valencia is president of Atlanta’s chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

One of the highlights of the conference Valencia says is a workshop called burying your biases; what is objectivity.

It’s a way to advance membership through training for the journalists.

According to Valencia, the workshop will show members the important of being transparent and not subjective when telling a story.

Many members of the Association of Hispanic journalists are freelancers.

Valencia says the conference will focus on creating opportunities for those journalists.
