The Reluctant Senator: Richard B. Russell and the JFK Assassination Investigation

Fifty years ago today President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Then, seven days later on November 29th, President Lyndon B. Johnson, by executive order, created the Warren Commission to fully investigate Kennedy’s assassination.

Johnson ordered then long time Georgia U. S. Senator Richard B. Russell to serve on the commission.

Russell tenaciously objected, but as WABE’s Rose Scott reports, at the time he was a key political figure in Washington.
