Residents protest for a safer Buford highway

Buford Highway is 50 miles long. It starts in Fulton County but runs mostly through DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. It’s also been a deadly highway for pedestrians.

Advocates and others are pushing the state to hurry up with safety improvements.

On the corner of Buford Highway, which has 7 lanes of traffic, and Briarwood Road, there’s a shopping center, a Citgo gas station and the Park Towne North apartment complex.

“Two people have been killed this year on Buford Highway near this residential apartment,” said Pedestrians Educating Drivers on Safety President and CEO Sally Flocks.

The people Flocks are talking about were hit by cars while crossing the street. Flocks also says this year a third person went into a coma after being hit by a car.

“That’s a lot of suffering that’s going on by the survivors and lost live that people wanted to express their concern,” said Flocks. “They want to see improvements.”

And they want to see improvements sooner than later. The Georgia Department of Transportation says it understands the urgency. But in a statement, the agency says Buford is a 7 lane highway with a lot of traffic. The state says those factors and money complicate putting in place mid-block crossing and other solutions.  The state says its Buford Highway project will begin later this year.
