Severe Storms Coming to Georgia this Weekend

Mother Nature is throwing another curveball at Georgia.

During the first half of the week much of the Peach State, including metro Atlanta, saw record-setting low temperatures.

And now, the week could end with vicious storms.

“The main threats would be strong, damaging winds with thunderstorms and tornado threats,” says meteorologist Adam Baker with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Severe storms are expected to strike northwest Georgia Friday night.

“Right now we really can’t rule out strong winds, 40 to 60 miles per hour, with some of these storms.  We got very high wind-shear in the environment.  But the amount of instability could be limited, and that’s typical for this time of year,” says Baker.

Heavy gusts, and possibly a tornado, could hit metro Atlanta and top half of the state Saturday morning.

Strong rains could be seen in some areas as well.

“We can’t rule out isolated flooding with this already being a pretty wet environment that we can’t seem to get out of,” says Baker.

One thing these storms won’t bring is frigid weather.

Baker says temperatures should remain well above freezing throughout Sunday.
