Social isolation–loneliness–is a national epidemic.

In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an 83-page report on the issue and its potentially devastating health results.  But even among a problem that permeates all corners of our nation, Atlanta consistently ranks at the top of the ‘lonely city’ list.

Why?

With six million residents and an additional two million on the way by 2050, the notion that a person would feel alone…could feel alone…might seem absurd. But nearly half of Atlanta residents say they feel, or have recently felt, socially isolated.

“Six Million and Lonely” delves into how different groups of Atlantans experience that loneliness, examines what factors–distinctive and shared–are behind it, and considers what we all can do to combat it.
