'Speaking of Music': Grand Vapids
Grand Vapids is an Atlanta- and Athens-based band described as “thoughtfully executed guitar slow-pop,” but guitarist Austin Harris prefers simply “rock.”
Harris and his co-founding bandmate McKendrick Bearden met in the music program at LaGrange College. They began making music together that would eventually evolve into the tuneful, considered pop sound of Grand Vapids.
Harris speaks reverently of their longtime collaboration, attesting that the project of Grand Vapids was a matter of “trying to keep up with McKendrick’s songwriting.”
Their featured track “Glassing Out” delivers a steady chiming rhythm, made mysterious with unresolved chords and lyrics exploring the feeling of “disassociating in a moment… and trying your best to force yourself to remain present.”
Grand Vapids is currently on a break from live performance, focused on new recordings.
A related project is the band Hefner, featuring Grand Vapids members McKendrick Bearden and Taylor Cotton, and a solo record by Bearden is anticipated later this year. Grand Vapids is on Instagram at @grandvapids, and their work is available to hear and purchase at www.grandvapids.com.
