State of Atlanta’s Environment on Earth Day

On this Earth Day, Atlanta is taking steps towards improving its environment, but we still have challenges, according to Gil Rogers, Senior Attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center.

Rogers acknowledges our ongoing problem with traffic and related pollution, but he says Atlanta also has serious water issues. “We’re putting so much strain on the water resources that are here in the Atlanta area,” said Rogers.  ”And I think we still have a ways to go in terms of really embracing water conservation and water efficiency as viable water management tools.”

Rogers says the economic downturn has impacted efforts to improve the environment because of budget cuts at the state and federal levels.

On the good side, he points to the Atlanta Beltline and streetcar projects as steps in the right environmental direction. An audio version of this story
