State To Investigate Mysterious Donkey Deaths
The state is investigating the mysterious death of some donkeys in a south Georgia county. As heard on the radio
The Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed Friday it’s now looking into the deaths, which occurred in Grady County, located on the Georgia-Florida border. The department said it doesn’t comment on open investigations.
Randy Wind, editor at the Cairo Messenger based in Cairo, Ga., has been following the story. He said the county has no idea what’s caused the deaths.
“The Grady Board of Commissioners discussed it at their meeting on Tuesday – which I was in attendance – and their concern was that someone with the state needed to be notified to investigate the cause of death of the donkeys,” Wind said.
Wind said four donkey carcasses were found on small roads off State Route 111 in the Calgary area in the last two weeks. Two more were reportedly pets, and their sudden deaths were called in by the couple who owned them.
Wind says he’s unsure if the pets were part of the four original deaths.
The couple’s remaining donkeys, however, have been quarantined by the Agriculture Department as of Friday.
County Administrator Carlos Tobar says he wasn’t aware of the state investigation or reports of two more deaths. As for the original four deaths, “one of the theories is that potentially they just were dumped there,” Tobar said.
But as to why the animals died – Tobar says the county still has no idea.
