State Jobless Rate Falls to 9%

Georgia’s jobless rate has dropped for eight straight months. The Georgia Department of Labor reports that 9% of Georgians were looking for work last month, compared to 9.1% the month before.

Some economists have said the national unemployment rate continues to fall because people have stopped looking for work.

But state labor commissioner Mark Butler says the number of Georgia job seekers has increased.

“Over the last 11 months we’ve had gains,” Butler says, “So, we’re at some of our highest levels of people looking for jobs. The good news here in Georgia is that they’re actually finding jobs.”

March’s jobless rate is Georgia’s lowest since February of 2009, when unemployment in the state was 8.9%.
