State Wildlife Officials Want You to Go Fish

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) really wants you to go fish, so it has beefed up its fishing tackle loaner program.

You can now borrow fishing tackle, for free, at 25 different state parks and historic sites.

The state’s sports fish restoration program makes it possible according to Melissa Cummings of the DNR’s wildlife resources division. “It’s a program that allows funds that come from a federal excise tax that’s placed on fishing equipment and related items to fishing equipment,” says Cummings. “And then those are directed back to benefit recreational anglers. And the way that money comes to Georgia is based on things like paid sporting licenses.”

The loaner tackle is free, but you will have to pay for a license. A three-day fishing license currently costs $3.50. If you are under 16 years of age, the license is free.
