Survey: Georgia becoming more bike friendly
A survey done by the League of American Bicyclists shows that Georgia is becoming a more bike friendly state. In the League‘s annual survey Georgia ranked 23rd out of 50 states and that’s up from 40th position last year.
Brent Buice is the Executive Director of advocacy group Georgia Bikes. He says one of the biggest improvements was the passing of the Better Bicycling Bill last year. One of the highlights of the bill is a three foot passing provision which is designed to give cyclists more room on the road. Georgia did less well when it came to the evaluation and planning category. Buice says the Georgia Department of Transportation needs to take the lead.
“What we need is just more of a top down public commitment to accommodating all road users. So we want to make sure that our roads from a design and policy perspective are designed for people of all ages, physical abilities, pedestrian, bicyclists as well as motorists,” said Buice.
The league recognized Athens Clarke County, Roswell and Tybee Island for being bicycle friendly communities.
