Suwanee Residents Can Take Wine Home from Restaurants

Suwanee residents who dine out can now take home unfinished bottles of wine. The change comes after the Suwanee city council voted unanimously this week to update the city’s alcohol regulations.

Prior to Tuesday’s vote, wine purchased at restaurants in the city would have to be consumed or remain at the restaurant. But council members approved allowing wine to be taken home if it’s recorked, bagged and placed in the trunk of a vehicle. The council made the decision several years after the passage of a state law allowing for the same thing. Marty Allen is Suwanee’s city manager.

“I can’t speak for each individual council member, but in general this type of provision is considered a safety provision to permit individuals from having to feel obligated to consume an expensive bottle of wine that’s sitting on the table and not wasting the money. It would allow them to take that home and delay drinking it until a more appropriate time.”

Allen also says the council voted to allow restaurants in the city to offer happy hour specials. But he says the most of changes to the city’s alcohol regulations were administrative in nature. The new regulations take effect immediately.
