The Tony Award-winning musical 'Hairspray' dazzles the audience at Out Front Theatre Company
The joyous, madcap 1960s fever dream of “Hairspray” is coming to Out Front Theatre in what the company says will be an extravaganza.
The hit musical, which has won 8 Tony Awards, including “Best Musical,” is based on the 1988 comedy film by writer/director John Waters. It follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, a charming plus-size teenager, who embarks on an epic quest to dance on the “Corny Collins Show,” ultimately transforming her community in the process.
]”Hairspray” is on stage at Out Front Theatre Company through Nov. 9. “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with director Justin Kalin and Caty Bergmark, who plays Tracy Turnblad, about the production.
“We’re all trying to bring John Water’s spirit, but I don’t want to lose sight of what people have come to expect from the musical itself,” said Kalin.
