Thirty Atlanta-based Employees Affected by Delta’s Closure of Comair

Delta Air Lines Friday announced it will shut down its regional subsidiary Comair.

The decision comes as Delta weans itself from small, expensive regional jets.

Comair operates as a “Delta Connection” carrier mostly out of the Cincinnati area, and has some of the airline’s oldest and least-efficient 50-seat jets, Delta says.

In a letter to employees, Comair president Ryan Grumm called the decision an unfortunate necessity in a challenging industry and economy.

Aviation consultant Mike Boyd agrees.

“Delta can’t make money with them at high fuel costs as those airplanes age, so  it makes sense for them to get rid of them as fast as possible,” he says.

Comair employs about 1,700 people, including 30 crew members based here in Atlanta.

An airline spokeswoman says Delta will offer severance packages to affected workers.

Delta says customers will see no disruptions, nor will the change affect the airline’s schedule or route map.
