Three joggers in Buckhead shot by driver, police say
A driver shot at three pedestrians in a residential part of Atlanta, injuring one, before crashing into and severely injuring a man at an apartment complex hours later, police said Saturday.
The apparent drive-by shootings occurred Saturday morning in Atlanta’s wealthy Buckhead neighborhood, where residents have been vocal about a rise in violent crime across the city.
The suspect was detained at the scene of the car crash about 1 mile away. Deputy Atlanta Police Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said during a news conference that the man may have been “suffering from some type of mental health crisis.”
According to police, the crash victim is in his 20s and had been taking out his trash when he was struck. He was severely injured, taken to the hospital and rushed into surgery.
Police reported that the gunshot victim was out for a morning walk when a driver in a silver car shot him in the thigh. He was conscious and breathing when officers arrived at the scene. He was described in his 40s and police later said he was in stable condition.
Hampton said authorities received calls from two other joggers who reported someone shot at them as well. Neither was hurt.
Police said they found ballistic evidence inside the man’s car that they believe ties the vehicle to the drive-by shootings.
Investigators questioned the suspect, but had as of Saturday evening had not released his name or said what charges he could face.
