A little more than a year ago, Lamar Riddick and a Nicholas “Nicco” Feemster were both making their own way as civilians and individual artists, with hopes of making a living from their music.
They both saw the potential in an opportunity with the U.S. Army, as the Army’s Field Band looked to add some new genres to its repertoire.
After a rigorous interview process involving performing, writing and collaborating with other artists, the two were selected as the Army band’s first rappers.
They completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Now they tour with the Field Band, performing music they say still allows them to express themselves, while also promoting the military’s values.
The pair performed live at Centennial Olympic Park for Atlanta’s Juneteenth celebration, and afterward spoke to WABE’s Christopher Alston about how they reached this point and how they see their role in the military.
