UGA Looks to Raise $1B by 2020

The University of Georgia is hoping a two-step approach will lead to $1 billion dollars in pledges and gifts by the year 2020.

Officials at the school admit that’s a grand sum, but it’s a gradual process.

“You don’t have to get it all in one year.  You’ve got eight years to make the case and to request support and have your donors come in and give you the kind of gifts that will help you reach that ultimate goal,” says Tom Landrum, the VP for Development and Alumni Relations at UGA.

The “quiet” phase of the campaign is already underway.  That’s when key benefactors are approached and asked to give the university a big head-start.

After that the “public” phase will start, which includes marketing in various forms of media.

The funds will be used to strengthen the future of the school.

“We are focusing on raising money to benefit out students and our academic programs and we are hoping and focusing on building endowments….and in particular, we want to seek endowed gifts.  We want to build up the level of the University of Georgia’s endowment,” says Landrum.

Many universities look to bolster their private donations to loosen dependence on public dollars.

UGA’s Office of Institutional Research reports school donations have averaged about $109 million annually over the past few years.
