UGA Students Try to Tackle HOPE Solution

The University of Georgia’s Student Government Association is taking steps to try to preserve the HOPE scholarship. At a meeting Tuesday night, the SGA will consider three different proposals. Director of External Affairs Sarah Beck says the first plan is a reimbursement program.

“Basically,  if you have the GPA requirement that HOPE requires, you’ll be reimbursed for that tuition at the end of your Freshman year,” Beck says, “Because, based on our research, so many students lose HOPE within their first year.”

A second proposal would keep the GPA and SAT requirements for HOPE the same. And the third idea, to be presented by Gwinnett County developer Dan O’Leary, would support bringing video lottery terminals to Georgia, with proceeds going to HOPE. Beck says the SGA will likely vote on a proposal tonight. They hope to present their final plan to state lawmakers.
