United Way Of Greater Atlanta Hands Out $3M In Grants
The United Way of Greater Atlanta is giving more than $3 million to some area organizations.
For its first Dare to Forget the Box grant ceremony, United Way chose four organizations for their collaborative efforts and focus on solving issues in metro Atlanta.
Milton Little, president of United Way of Greater Atlanta, said the grant allows the organization to fund projects it normally wouldn’t fund.
“This breaks that trend,” Little said. “It allows the agencies and allows us to do some things that would not normally be funded under the current guidelines that exist right now.”
The top prize went to Talk to Me Baby, which aims to expose babies to language as early as possible. The group will receive more than $1.5 million over three years.
Jennifer Stapel-Wax is with the Marcus Autism Center — the lead agency of the project.
“This project really proves that they see the potential of preventing problems down the line and putting coaching and active engagement on the front burner,” said Jennifer Stapel-Wax of the Marcus Autism Center, the lead agency on the project.
She said the money will go towards training nurses to teach parents how to talk to their infants.
Other winners include the Veterans Empowerment Organization Workforce and Social Enterprise Initiative ($900,000 over three years), the Childhood Acute Mental Health Practices Program (900,000 over three years) and the Childhood Acute Mental Health Practices Program (300,000 over three years).
