Voter Groups Concerned About Registration Snafus

Some voter groups say they’re concerned about registration snafus in the lead up to next week’s city and county elections. As heard on the radio

Elizabeth Poythress, who heads the League of Women Voters of Georgia, says a few problems can have a big effect on smaller elections.

“If, for instance, you have 100 votes in a small community, a hundred votes can mean a whole lot,” Poythress says.

Earlier this week, Fulton County sent out more than 30,000 new voter registration cards after issues with the state’s new voter registration software caused errors in the first batch. Similar problems were also reported in Cobb, Gwinnett and DeKalb. And Fulton officials say about 166 voters were incorrectly told they might not be able to vote because they were convicted felons.

“This is their job,” says Helen Kim Ho, who heads the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center. “We’re not asking for special treatment or extra favors. These elected officials and boards, they’re there for this one thing.”

Ho says a few early voters have reported issues and urged Asian-Americans who experience problems to call the center.

Poythress says she hasn’t gotten any complaints, but says the League will have members available by phone and at some polling spots on Election Day.
