In 2014, WABE’s Jim Burress traveled to Liberia to report on the Carter Center’s work helping to build up the country’s mental healthcare infrastructure nearly a decade after the end of a civil war that left many in the population traumatized.
Upon returning, Burress had the opportunity to sit down with the late former President Jimmy Carter to discuss the importance of the center’s work and the challenges facing Liberia.
He said the Carter Center was instrumental in training medical providers, mostly nurses, to provide mental healthcare and Carter was the first sitting president to make a trip to sub-Saharan Africa.
Burress shared this reflection with “All Things Considered” as funeral services are being prepared for the 39th president and the only Georgian to ever hold the office.
