#1. Which candidate has not visited Atlanta this week?
It’s Donald Trump.
Republican vice presidential nominee U.S. Sen. JD Vance R-Ohio kicked off a week full of campaign visits with a speech at a Monday event at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. Organized by the Faith & Freedom Coalition, the fundraiser targeted evangelical Christians and aimed to project a message of unity between Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who was also in attendance, and the Republican ticket.
The next day, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Democrats’ vice presidential nominee, appeared at political events in Macon and Atlanta. It’s a bike park.
The Atlanta Beltline Partnership announced Tuesday that it received an $8 million donation from the Chestnut Family Foundation to create a bike park in Westside Park.
Westside, a former quarry that currently serves as Atlanta’s largest greenspace, was chosen for the base of the project due to its “central location, bike connectivity, outstanding amenities, forest canopy, and unique topography,” said Brett Davidson, executive director of trail advocacy organization MTB Atlanta, in a Tuesday press release.
#3. Votes for which presidential candidate will for now still count in the November general election in Georgia?
It’s both.
In yet another reversal, Georgia Supreme Court paused orders to disqualify votes for presidential candidates Cornel West and Claudia De la Cruz. De la Cruz is the presidential candidate of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and West is running as an independent.
This decision comes after a pair of Fulton County judges disqualified West and De la Cruz from the Georgia ballot. Democrat-backed challenges have alleged that the two did not meet the criteria to qualify for the November presidential election.
De la Cruz and West could still be disqualified by the state high court.
#4. What can student-athletes now do in Georgia?
It’s receive financial compensation directly from colleges and universities.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order on Tuesday that effectively does that.
The executive order comes as the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) and other athletic conferences battle in litigation on the issue of student-athletes being financially compensated for the use of name, image and likeness, or NIL.
The order attempts to protect Georgia colleges from being punished by the NCAA or any other organization for getting compensation for their athletes. It also prevents state funds from being used as payments for the players and their NIL deals, likely meaning the money would come from private donations.
